I live in Brooklyn, New York City. This is a space for me to showcase some of my personal work in software/technology/mathematics and to post what little writing I’ve done. Always aspiring to do more. I also have a part-time pottery practice, Union Pots.
Software
I work on a lot of personal software projects (see my GitHub). Historically I’ve been deeply invested in the craft of coding, but I’m updating my practices now that the AI coding tools are so good.
These are my favorite projects:
-
Texcraft is a project to create an LLVM-style infrastructure for building TeX engines in Rust. I’ve used it to build things like knuthplass.dev (interactive demo of TeX’s line-breaking algorithm) and the Texcraft playground (TeX coding in the browser). My long-term goal is to reimplement pdfTeX with a modular and malleable codebase.
-
Transiter is a web service that subscribes to realtime transit data feeds and provides views of the data through a REST API. Demo site.
-
Hoard is a distributed fault-tolerant system for collecting data feeds, written in Go. I currently have a three replica deployment collecting NYC transit data.
-
The realtimerail.nyc TypeScript/React webapp displays train times for the NYC Subway. Despite being branded, it’s fully open source (repository). Lovingly designed by hand before the AI era!
Mathematics
I graduated with a PhD in mathematics from the Courant Institute, New York University, in 2018. My adviser was Pierre Germain. My thesis is entitled Two topics in the theory of nonlinear Schrödinger equations (PDF download).
Before that I did an undergraduate degree at University College Cork in the Irish city where I grew up.
